The Setup

Tongits is a three-player rummy-style card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The dealer distributes 12 cards to each of the two non-dealers and 13 cards to the dealer. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the centre. The goal is to form valid card combinations (melds) and reduce your hand's total point value as much as possible before calling Tongits or winning through a draw or fight.

Card Values

Numbered cards are worth their face value (2 through 10). Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are each worth 10 points. Aces are worth 1 point. The lower your total hand value when the game ends, the better your position. Melds laid on the table have no point value — only the cards still in your hand count against you at the end.

Taking Turns

On each turn you draw one card from the pile or pick up the top discard, then either lay down a meld, add to an existing meld (called a "sapaw"), and finally discard one card to end your turn. Play proceeds clockwise. A meld must be either a set of three or more same-rank cards, or a sequence of three or more consecutive cards in the same suit.

Winning the Game

You win by going "Tongits" — playing all your cards onto the table in valid melds with nothing left in hand. Alternatively, you can call a "fight" (draw) at any point after at least one card has been drawn. When a fight is called, all players reveal their remaining hand points and the player with the lowest total wins the pot. The dealer also wins automatically if the draw pile runs out.

Betting and the Pot

At kkkjilli each player contributes the table ante to the pot at the start of each hand. Additional pot contributions happen when a player passes without melding ("burning"). The pot accumulates across hands until a player wins outright by Tongits — at which point they collect the entire pot. On a draw/fight win, only the current hand's pot is collected.
